Enrollment Requirements

In order to enroll in candidacy (full-time or part-time) for a given training year, the following requirements must be met by all candidates:

  1. A candidate must be in a personal analysis with an SFCP Personal/Training Analyst**,** unless the requirements for termination have been met. Alternately, a candidate may apply for a waiver (a) to continue an established analysis with an analyst who does not meet the requirements to become an SFCP Training analyst or (b) to pursue personal analysis with an analyst from outside SFCP who meets requirements for Training Analyst appointment, but does not wish to go through SFCP’s process to become an SFCP Training Analyst
  2. Completion of the Psychoanalytic Training Enrollment Form, which includes a commitment to abide by all PED policies about clinical confidentiality, course attendance, course make-up work, course feedback, hybrid learning guidelines, and other policies as specified on the Enrollment Form.
  3. A separate link to a Personal Analysis Attestation Form (kept separate from your Enrollment Form and viewable only by the PED Chair Beth Steinberg) requests the name of your analyst, and affirms that you a) are in a personal psychoanalysis with an SFCP-approved Training Analyst at a minimum frequency of 3x/week, b) have completed this requirement for training, or c) are not in a personal psychoanalysis with an SFCP-approved Training Analyst at a minimum frequency of 3x/week and have not completed the requirement. (See section on Personal Training Analysis.)
  4. Completion of the secure On-Line Payment Form, which requires candidates to submit a credit card to pay the initial non-refundable deposit and fees and to select a tuition payment schedule for subsequent automated tuition payments. Candidates who are encountering unexpected financial hardship may contact the Dean to discuss the possibility of an alternate payment arrangement
  5. Completion of any tutorials from the prior academic year
  6. Completion of any outstanding make-up work from the prior academic year
  7. Completion of any outstanding course feedback surveys from the prior academic year
  8. Completion of all annual case reports from the prior academic year
  9. Candidates are expected to have at least one control case in supervised analysis before enrolling in Year 3 courses.

Public Representation of Candidacy

During their training at SFCP, we want candidates to develop their psychoanalytic identities and practices but also to represent their qualifications accurately to protect both the integrity of our training program and the public interest.  Although candidates are licensed mental health professionals, psychoanalytic training is an additional, specialized qualification. We ask that candidates be mindful of this in representing themselves to the public.

Once candidates have enrolled in training (per the above requirements), they may publicly identify themselves as a ‘candidate psychoanalyst’ or ‘psychoanalyst in training’ at SFCP.  Once a candidate receives first-case permission from the PGC to begin supervised clinical work, it is then permissible for a candidate to say that they offer ‘psychoanalysis’ and describe themselves as ‘practicing psychoanalysis’ as long as they indicate their training status at some point in any public announcements, such as web pages, program bios, etc.
