Before beginning coursework, all candidates must be in analysis with an SFCP Training Analyst or receive a waiver to continue an ongoing analysis with a graduate analyst who is not a Training Analyst as of May 1st. The process for applying for a waiver and all applicable links are described on the SFCP Website. In the remainder of this document, the terms ‘personal analysis’ and ‘training analysis’ are used interchangeably.

The expectation is that the frequency of the training analysis is 3-5 times per week.  Analytic fees are arranged between the candidate and analyst.

The decision to meet in-person or remotely is left up to the candidate and their analyst, but to maximize the training opportunity, it is strongly recommended to have as much in-person, on the couch experience of the personal analysis as possible.

In accordance with SFCP’s commitment to making psychoanalytic training more affordable and accessible to individuals affected by race-based and class-based systemic inequities, SFCP is now offering Affordable Training Analysis and Supervision for Equity & Diversity to help cover costs of analytic training for BIPOC candidates and candidates with financial need who are enrolled in the SFCP Analytic Training Program or have accepted an offer of admission for the upcoming year. To learn more, please see a more detailed description of the Affordable Training Analysis and Supervision Program on the SFCP Website and the Analytic Training Webpage for TA/SA availability.

Length of Training Analysis

It is optimal for candidates to have as complete, in terms of depth and intensity, an experience of personal analysis as possible. The candidate’s personal growth and self-understanding are the paramount considerations. We also emphasize immersion in classes, personal analysis and supervision concurrently. In addition, it is essential for candidates to participate fully in personal analysis while experiencing the emotional demands of psychoanalytic training.

At a minimum, candidates are required to remain in their training analysis until the following two requirements are met:

Active Candidates:

Leave of Absence Candidates:

Requests for exceptions to the requirement may be considered in specific cases.

Privacy of the Candidate’s Training Analysis

SFCP is a non-reporting training program, meaning that the training analyst does not report on the analysis of the candidate. (Beginning September 2023, training analysts no longer notify the PED of the start date, end date, and the frequency of meetings of the training analysis.)

Applicants are informed of the personal analysis requirement on their application and asked to attest to their intention to begin a personal analysis with an SFCP-approved Training Analyst at a minimum frequency of 3x/week by May, if they have not already done so.  When necessary, the TA Chair offers assistance in obtaining TA analyst approval (i.e. waivers and TA Applications) in order to support existing treatments, and the TA Chair can also help to locate an SFCP Training Analyst for applicants not already in treatment.   The intention of the May deadline is so that the personal analysis will be well-established prior to beginning classes in September.
